buck,

I don't think I'm gonna come up with anything particularly novel, but from one buck to another buck I've just gotta respond to you.

I focus on the big-picture stuff of what business is all about by reading particularly interesting articles in the two main rags you already mentioned. Unlike you, I don't read all of anything.

I narrow the big picture down to the smaller picture of the high-tech arena by scanning CNET News online on a weekly basis. I also read the dead-tree version of Red Herring, which in my opinion is far superior to the online version.

Of the six stock positions I own, I follow folders dediacted to them on an irregular basis for some of them, not all of them. I've come to the belief that understanding those companies in the context of the discussions that take place in this folder is more important to me than any other ongoing research I do.

For focusing on the financial health of a company, I read SEC filings accessed through WSRN, consolidated historical financial data prepared by WSRN, and earnings estimates compiled by Zacks at Quicken. I use the Fool's Pegulator for Windows downloaded to my hard disk for free when calculating the Fool Ratio.

I encourage you to read all three books by Moore. I've only read two of them so far. I also look forward to reading Christensen's book which sits on my "to be read" shelf.

And if you haven't learned about page points, they're much better than paper clips and highlighters for marking important items in books and magazines to be studied again in the future. They can be found at Levenger.com by doing a search on "page points." Joel Yagoda will vouch for them. He might get a commission for referrals but I don't. :)
