I don't know Joe, all I did was invest in one miserable little fibre channel company 3 years ago and suddenly found the yoke of due diligence balanced precariously across my shoulders with the shifting weights of technological whimsy. To say that things are in flux is an order of magnitude understatement.

There are a lot of heavy bets placed on companies based on high expectations, present and future, across various tech market segments, creating a synergistic affect on valuations. The more VC money breeds technological success, the more VC money that success returns to breed new technology, a so-called 'virtuous circle'. The tech sector has grown from amoeba to whole organisms that collectively constitute the beast that can't be stopped. To quote E.M. Forester, "Just connect."

All I know is Customers buy technology with the simplest and cheapest migration path from their current setup, and Consumers will not care what acronyms are attached to the services they want. Think I'll get back to KISS now.

Raining, and felt like a rant, sorry.

Douglas

Joe,

thanks for yours and Douglas' posts.

<< Here is information on a product that does IP over DWDM. I think IP over DWDM is more efficient than Sonet. >>

This has been an interesting concept lately (well, for me at least). I just read in GGR --

<< "...The cumbersome layering of IP over WDM, becoming intelorable as as the SONET toll heads toward 10 Billion a year, is giving way to a simple stack of IP over WDM. Mesh network technologies enabled by real time lambda provisioning from Sycamore, Avanex, Xros, Corvis, and Lucent via its Wavestar Lambda router, will more cheaply and efficiently replace legacy SONET rings. " >>

trying to find out who exactly is going to be hurt and helped by this if true? doesn't sound good for SONET if true. i respect Gilder, although i think he's a little off on fibre channel. interestingly, viangio in the Yahoo Ancor thread, who is clearly one of the few knowledgeable posters, seems to like the old ATM/SONET thing.

Is Gary still around? i don't think he could wait to get out of this one. ;-)

thanks for any thoughts,
pigboy
