NT does a number of things in background including checks of memory and reallocation of disk storage to reduce fragmentation. Server systems with more advanced hardware capability such as Compaq ProLiant also monitor various classes of soft errors. Compaq has a pre-failure warranty that covers memory, disk storage, NIC cards and a number of other components and they will replace them even when they are working fine based on changes in soft error rates... for a guy who is into the guts of that part of the system, like myself, that's pretty impressive stuff. Next generation products from Compaq will allow hot swap of memory and processor without taking they system down. If the OS supported it, they could "soft swap" that stuff through dynamic reallocation, but I think that will be a while reaching the mass production products.
