"Viet Nam and Malaysia are preparing to exploit a gas field in the overlapping sea between the two countries in the first years of the new century to fuel power plants in Tra Vinh and Can Tho southern provinces."

HANOI, March 8 (Asia Pulse) - Gas reserves on Viet Nam's continental shelf are estimated at about 2,200 billion cu.m., according to foreign oil and gas companies and the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Corporation (PetroVietnam).

However, an initial gas master-plan worked out by the oil and gas sector has put gas reserves at 1,200 billion cu.m. at least, with the southern continental shelf having the largest potential.

The BP and Statoil of Britain have estimated gas reserves at 500 billion cu.m. in the Nam Con Son sedimentary layers off the southern coast, with Lan Tay-Lan Do being the largest gas field. Meanwhile, Unocal Exploration Ltd. of the US and Belgium's Petro Fina have also discovered gas reserves in Viet Nam's southwestern continental shelf.
