I agree with your comments about NTFS - the background work the system does is to keep the fragmentation situation from getting even worse. Like several other things in NT, the journaling and virtualization in the file system is elegant but perhaps gave too little thought to the eventual performance impact... and is also one of the reasons that the performance is so sensitive to file cache size.

I understand that much of the development work at Compaq on dynamic reallocation and hot-swapping of critical components like memory is being done on Unix... and I am aware of some of the work at Sun in that regard...
