I find it extremely hard to believe that AMD has much more difficulty predicting earnings than sales. If they're comfortable enough pre-announcing on sales, then they should have a good feel for the earnings associated with those sales as well.

Assuming they know both, the only explanation I can think of for the omission is fear of legal liability. Investors will get more upset about inaccurate earnings guidance than inaccurate sales guidance.

This ignores the scenario, of course, where they chose not to announce on earnings because they preferred everyone to assume an earnings number rather than follow guidance. Why might AMD have this preference? Because the market's assumed earnings number is higher than that actually realized.
