Mexico's Iusacell and Globalstar in satellite phone deal

MEXICO CITY, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Nuevo Grupo Iusacell, Mexico's second largest cellular operator, will start marketing satellite phone services and products from Globalstar de Mexico, provider of Globalstar Telecommunications (NasdaqNM:GSTRF - news).

The two firms said in a news release Monday that Iusacell (NYSE:CEL - news) will offer customers Globalstar satellite telephone systems that use land-based CDMA (code division multiple access) technology for communications within the cellular coverage area of Iusacell.

The Mexican firm also will offer Globalstar's services where cellular coverage is unavailable.

``The Globalstar systems are trimodal, and they provide CDMA, analog and satellite digital transmissions in a single terminal unit,' said Amaury Rivera, Iusacell's vice president of marketing.

Iusacell, managed and operated by subsidiaries of U.S. phone firm Bell Atlantic (NYSE:BEL - news), had some 1.1 million suscribers as of September 30, and is second to market leader Telcel, the cellular unit of former monopoly Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex) (NYSE:TMX - news).

Telcel reported 5.272 million users by the end of 1999.
