An interesting contribution Charles, thanks. The reason I benchmark the 50% Gains portfolio against the indexes and mutual funds each week is that, to me, they represent "the bull market". Outperforming the easy ways to invest your money takes some brains. Fortunately we are blessed with a lot of mental candlepower around here in the 50% Gains community. That's how some people dwarf my returns and bring in 60-80% gains in a market where two of the three main indexes are negative for the year. Making money is certainly much easier in a bull market. But the methodologies we are developing here should work in almost any climate if we stay on our toes.
