X, your children sound like they are naturally interested in music, and that makes such a difference in whether they enjoy lessons. My brother is a gifted musician but I cannot even carry a tune or play any instrument without a huge effort. I even got chased away from playing along on the tambourine when my friends played in bands, and they were mostly partying and extremely carefree (half-drunk), so I must be just horrible at even the most basic rhythm! I also think it is a mistake for parents to force the same regime on all their children, without taking the time to observe them as individuals and try to bring out what is unique about each child. My parents were not very sensitive about things like that.

Did you see American Pie yet? It sounds like just the most stupid movie, but I thought it was brilliant. It's making the pay per view rounds now. I was reminded of it because you said something about band children being a better cut in general. There is a girl in the movie who can't stop talking about what happened in band camp. Very, very funny movie, with good values.
