LU & CSCO claims they are hot on the heels of NT for the optical market. Yet the only investment announcement I hear to ramp up optics mfg capacity is from NT who has already announced 3 separate optics mfg capacity upgrade investments in the past 6 months.

What this tells me is that NT is still cleaning up in the hot optics market, LU is still struggling and CSCO is NOWHERE to be found other than buying two-bit players (Pirelli).

Real customer contracts and NT's aggressive optics investment plans are better proof that NT is winning the optics war when compared to LU and CSCO's PR releases.

Nortel Networks to Extend Global Optical Internet Market Leadership - To Address Explosive Customer Demand With Additional US$260 Million Investment
Increases Global Production Capacity for Industry's Leading High-Performance Optical Capabilities
TORONTO, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT), the global leader in Optical Internet solutions, will invest an additional US$260 million in its booming optical networking and components business. This follows Nortel Networks' US$400 million investment in optical networking announced in November 1999. These investments, and an expected tripling of production capacity in 2000, will accelerate the company's ability to answer explosive customer demand for its market-leading Optical Internet systems and components.

Nortel Networks plans to invest US$186 million in Canada, including US$102 million in Ottawa and US$84 million in Montreal. An additional US$64 million will be invested in Paignton and Monkstown in the United Kingdom, with another US$10 million to be dispersed among Nortel Networks' other global operations facilities. As a result of these investments, 3,400 new high-tech positions will be created globally in the areas of manufacturing, engineering, supply chain management, and customer service.

``We've established first-mover advantage in the Optical Internet space and lead the market for next-generation optical capabilities. Today's announcement will accelerate this momentum,' said John Roth, president and chief executive officer, Nortel Networks. ``Our global network of Optical Internet system houses and people will provide us with a competitive edge in the race to build the high-performance Internet.'

"It's amazing, just amazing how many people can't seem to understand a simple thing like a stock split. I've never seen such a simple thing so perennially, comically misunderstood by so many. Amazing. The issue never goes away--always some ninny who pops up to warn us all about not "losing out on the split". Who in their right minds can think you lose half the value of your investment if you buy at some very weird time before a 2-1 split??!?!"

RE: It's amazing to me how always someone drifts way off base and calls other people "ninnies", when people are on SI to try and further their knowledge and learn certain facts about stocks their following. Relax....
