Israel on High Alert Against Terror Attacks
By Julie Stahl
CNS Jerusalem Bureau Chief
14 February, 2000

Jerusalem (CNSNews.com) - Israeli security services were on high alert against terror attacks Monday, as a February 13 deadline for an Israel-Palestinian agreement on a "framework" for final status negotiations came and went.

Security has been stepped up throughout in Israel, especially in the big cities, out of fear that terrorists may be planning attacks. Last week a Hamas activist was killed and another seriously injured when an apparent car bomb exploded prematurely.

Police spokesman Ofer Sivan told CNSNews.com the authorities were not working on the basis of special intelligence information, but were rather on general alert. Sivan declined to say whether the alert was specifically connected to the breakdown in talks between Israel and the PA. (cont)
