Wes, we had a thunder buster in the hollow that shook the house like a bomb blast yesterday. Power goes out often. . . .I have Palm device and wireless internet on order to battle this. . . I may buy a laptop for similar use. . . though I am liking the Hewlett-Packard PC . . .really good value. . .includes CD-Recorder and DVD player . . . . . this way I could pass a few PCs down to kids.

Anyone wanting to buy a PC. . . there are some good prices out there. . . just watch out for the Microsoft Network rebate trap. . . they will give you $400 if you buy a complete system and agree to signing 36 months at $21.95/month . . which is around $700 total. And considering that many are now offering free internet service. . . this is bad deal.

Also, I would think it will be hard for MSFT to enforce these contracts. . . especially with the college age group that is most attracted to the offer. . . .meaning, it could end up being a terrible marketing program for MSFT in the end. NEVER give away money. 70% of the public forgets to send in rebates. . . companies count on this. . . .but nobody is going to forget to send in for a $400 rebate. . . .yet many young people will move many times over 3 years. . .making it very easy to lose track of that revenue. . . . and a growing percentage of young consumers are getting into credit trouble. . . so there will be many write-offs.

This would not be such a big deal normally. . . but Sunday's paper has this MSN deal advertised VERY heavily by Best Buy, Office Depot, Office Max, Staples, Circuit City and others. . . . it looks like they are profiting at Microsoft's expense.

Meanwhile, MSFT is releasing Windows 2000 this week. . .but there is nowhere NEAR the buzz that surrounded Windows 98 or 95. . . .meaning this too could be a big disappointment. . . . I don't like the way they throw their money around either. . . . add to that the problems in D.C. and I am bearish on MSFT.

CORL under $17? I love it. Go figure.
