More Wafer, Easier for Amkor Chartered breaks ground on $2.1 billion megafab, considers 300-mm option Semiconductor Business News (02/18/00, 09:00:41 AM EDT) SINGAPORE--Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Pte. Ltd. here today broke ground on a $2.1 billion wafer fab, which will be equipped to process ICs with 0.15-micron technologies starting in the middle of 2001. As reported last month by SBN, Chartered is considering the possible use of 300-mm wafer equipment in Fab 7, if tools are ready for mass production and if market conditions justify the use of larger diameter substrates. The new fab is part of Chartered's campaign to double ifs silicon foundry capacity from about 700,000 eight-inch equivalent wafers a year to 1.4 billion wafers by the end of 2001 (see Jan. 21 story). When fully equipped, Fab 7 will handle 60,000 eight-inch wafers a month, said Chartered president and CEO Barry Waite in an interview last month. Chartered considered a number of potential plant sites around the world for Fab 7, but decided to place chip factory near its other facilities in Singapore. "By having our fabrication facilities close to one another, we leverage the combined strengths of our resources, knowledge and staff," said Waite, during the ground-breaking ceremony today. Located in Singapore's Woodlands Industrial Park, Fab 7 and its manufacturing support building will occupy 4.3 hectares (11.75 acres) of land. The buildings are currently sized at 775,000 square feet. The cleanroom production area of Fab 7 will be about 170,000 square feet, which Chartered said will make it one of the world's largest 200-mm facilities in the world at this point in time.
