Thank-you, Joan, for your warm welcome. On the whole, I agree with you that 'can' for 'may' is no real improvement. But the way that the sentence was presented to us suggested to me that it had been flagged by some pedant as flawed, and the can/may issue was the only thing that I could imagine being challenged. Anyway, I probably won't be around much for a few more months yet. Things are pretty busy for me while I tidy up a few projects that are long overdue.
