Diamond H: A support line can not become resistance until it has been broken, then it is possible for it to become a support/resistance line. Same for a resistance line that is broken. Then current price action dictates the role a SRL plays...I hope this helps.

I am not sure what you mean by "why does closeness to previous price action matter"...let me just say I have spent years studying investor behavior via technical tools (charts & indicators). It is not always easy to explain what I see and react to. In some cases it is impossible because I use some of my own indicators and formulas, stuff I do not share...sorry!

Of course all of the above IMO.
