Lithography prices will rise 16.1% a year until 2003, says report

NEW TRIPOLI, Pa. --Lithography--the highest priced tool in a wafer fab--will get a lot more expensive in the next several years. The average selling price for lithography systems will reach $9.8 million in 2003, according to a new report by The Information Network here.

"Lithography is the single largest cost factor in semiconductor production, and lithography costs have risen faster than the overall equipment industry," observed analyst Robert N. Castellano, president of The Information Network. "ASPs will increase at a compound average growth rate of 16.1% between 1999-2003, compared to about 10% for the remainder of the processing tools."

In the report on sub-0.25-micron lithography, the research firm concludes that ASM Lithography has become the second largest supplier of steppers and scanners, based on 1999 revenues and unit shipments. Canon Inc.'s revenues slipped by 2% in 1999, while sales jumped 54% at the Dutch lithography supplier, according to Castellano. He also estimated that ASML's market share, based on units, was at 30.1% in 1999--second to Nikon Corp.'s 35.4%.

"Another strong year by ASML may move them into the No. 1 spot in 2000," he said.
