02/10/2000 - Korean Automakers Moving Toward Fuel-Cell EVs

Korea - While some analysts say Korea's automakers are too far behind others developing
fuel-cell cars to ever catch up, Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Motors say they intend
to spend $8.92 million this year on fuel-cell research, reports the Korea Herald. Daewoo
Motor, another Korean automaker, is starting its fuel-cell research and development program
with a government-run laboratory. Two Korean oil refiners, SK Corp. and LG-Caltex Oil, are
also working on fuel-cell research. SK has already developed a fuel-cell transformer that
combines hydrogen and oxygen; the company said it will make it available to Hyundai and
Daewoo for testing. While DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Toyota and Honda already
announced they intend to start selling fuel cell-powered electric vehicles around 2003, Hyundai
will still be in the decision-making stage, a spokesman said. ''By 2003, Hyundai will make its
final decision on whether it will mass-produce fuel-cell cars or purchase fuel cells from abroad,''
said the Hyundai official.
