Australia's AAPT,Lucent In Network
Contract Tie

SYDNEY -- AAPT Ltd. (AAP), an Australian telecommunications
concern, said Tuesday it has signed a contract with U.S. communications
networking company Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU), to build and support
its A$450 million-A$500 million code division multiple access (CDMA)
mobile network.

AAPT's majority shareholder, Telecom Corp. of New Zealand (NZT), also
announced Tuesday that it has appointed Lucent to build a CDMA
network in New Zealand.

Telecom's chief executive officer, Theresa Gattung, said in a statement that
Telecom and AAPT had selected Lucent independently.

However, Gattung said there are "huge synergies and obvious customer
benefits" with both companies choosing the same vendor.

"Both the Telecom and AAPT teams will be working together on the
development of this project and the use of resources," Gattung said.

AAPT Chief Executive Officer Larry Williams said the contract with Lucent
will give AAPT "one of the lowest infrastructure per subscriber costs that
any telecommunications concern in the world has achieved to date."

Williams said for AAPT the capital expenditure savings is estimated at
about A$90 million, and there will be ongoing savings of about 20% of
operational and maintenance costs.

AAPT is considering a number of financing options for the network
construction, including an offer by Lucent to provide 100% vendor finance.
