Well, if you want my opinion -- if I were you, I wouldn't make the trip, given the high level of xenophobia in India these days. But if it is unavoidable, you would probably be OK if you have to stay in the major cities like Bombay, Madras and Bangalore. Keep in mind that resentment against Christian missionaries (one was burnt to death not too long ago, along with his children) is at a high pitch now and if you're a white person, you are liable to be a suspect, regardless of whether you're a missionary or not. And I'm sure you understand that rampaging mobs don't have time to listen for explanations.
