<based on anticipated deregulatory rulings from the FCC meeting this Thursday > So Thursday may be the start of an interesting period for PAIR? A refresher: PairGain's HiGain Solitaire Chosen For Focal Communications' HDSL2 Deployment Tustin, Calif. -- Nov. 2, 1999 -- PairGain© Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: PAIR), a leader in DSL access systems, today announced that Focal Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: FCOM), one of the nation's fastest growing competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs), has selected HiGain Solitaire? for HDSL2 deployment in Focal's advanced network. Focal plans to use PairGain's HDSL2 solution to provision T1 services faster in the 14 metropolitan markets it currently serves, as well as future markets the CLEC enters. Focal is one of the first CLECs to embrace the new standards-based technology and becomes a pioneer in HDSL2 deployment. "We are committed to deploying the latest standards-based technology that enables Focal to deliver the highest quality of service to our sophisticated customer base," said John Barnicle, chief operating officer of Focal. "By choosing PairGain's HDSL2 solution, we are delivering on our commitment to provide the first phase of our nationwide DSL strategy." Focal will be deploying HDSL2 technology for its "on-net" T1 strategy. This will enable the company to provide its customers with the superior service they have come to expect, while substantially reducing its transport expenses. Focal will use the HiGain Solitaire solution as an alternative to leasing T1 services from the Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier (ILEC). To deliver these services, Focal will utilize co-location space leased from the ILEC to house PairGain's equipment, thus increasing Focal's control of line implementation, monitoring and maintenance. "Unlike other CLECs, Focal's business plan aggressively targets large businesses for T1 services," said Mike Pascoe, president and CEO at PairGain. "We're excited about partnering with Focal and becoming an integral part of their leading-edge network solution." Focal will use PairGain's HiGain WideBand System 3190 (WBS-3190), a managed DS3-based T1 access platform, to deploy HiGain Solitaire. The WBS-3190 is PairGain's latest HiGain system, providing a standards-based shelf from which to offer HDSL- and HDSL2-based services. HiGain Solitaire HiGain Solitaire is the industry's first practical implementation of HDSL2, delivering the same performance, reach and reliability of two-pair HDSL. In addition to providing full T1 capability over one wire pair, HiGain Solitaire guarantees interoperability with other vendors' standards-compliant HDSL2 products. HiGain Solitaire is available in all central office and CPE form factors and is currently being evaluated in numerous field trials.
