Jay,

Why anyone would bother with a 8 MB Smart Media card in an mp3 player is beyond me.

This type of problem is old news. Remember that the original Rio! formatted SmartMedia so it couldn't be used in a digital camera without downloading a patch from Diamond's site.

Bottom line is that CompactFlash rocks!!!

Jay and Thread,

Very important release regarding removable storage solutions in cellular phones. Qualcomm endorses MMC and SDMC in new Internet launchpad suite...

Message 12886551

QUALCOMM (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced inauguration of the Company's Wireless Internet Launchpad(TM) suite, targeted at enabling a broad range of new terminal product applications and Internet services, including advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage functionality. QUALCOMM plans to integrate these capabilities as tightly as possible into the Company's CDMA chipset and system software solutions to achieve the best cost-performance as well as the earliest time-to-market for manufacturers designing new classes of e-commerce-, safety-, convenience- and entertainment-enhanced mobile handsets.

Storage:

-- Multimedia Card (MMC) interface, enabling addition of high-capacity removable memory for storage of data such as electronic maps, music and images, as well as for transfer of data to and from PCs and consumer devices
-- Secure Digital (SD) Card interface, supporting implementation of secure e-commerce services and copyright protection. The SD interface is backward compatible with MMC Cards
