Texas Instruments & SCS Corporation Announce Joint Development Agreement to Advance UHF RFID Technologies

Fast Track to a New Generation of RFID Solutions

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 14, 2000--Technology leaders Texas Instruments and SCS Corporation today announced they are teaming to design a UHF (868/915 MHz) radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. This joint development will be instrumental in advancing UHF RFID technologies.

The two companies will develop a core UHF technology to allow each to independently manufacture and market these derivative RFID tag and scanner products through their channel partners to the RFID end user market. Initial productintroduction is expected late 2000. This new product platform leverages existing and emerging allowances in the global UHF bands to deliver breakthrough performance in passive read range.

Texas Instruments, a high-tech manufacturing giant with over 70 million RFID transponders sold, has partnered with SCS
Corporation due to its proven technological expertise. SCS's Dura-label(r) 2.45GHz technology encompasses a superior
anti-collision tag protocol, long passive tag read range, and low RFID tag prices that are already strengths in the market.

According to SCS president and CEO Jacob Jacobsson, "The key to this relationship is the ability to leverage SCS's technology know-how with Texas Instruments' manufacturing and marketing strengths.

This new UHF band supports a longer reading passive RFID tag that will open new markets."

SCS and Texas Instruments believe this cooperation will have the combined strength to create a standard for passive RFID tags in the UHF band. Both companies strongly believe that the formation of RFID standards in the UHF band will greatly enhance open solutions for RFID end users.

Together the two companies will promote a standards proposal to be submitted to the ISO SC 31 and ANSI as well as other standards organizations to harmonize industry standards in North America and
Europe.

Texas Instruments entered the radio frequency identification market in 1991 with the worldwide introduction of the TIRIS product line. Fusing together core competencies in advanced semiconductors, microelectronic packaging and computer system design, TI has low (134.2 kHz) and mid (13.56 MHz) frequency RFID products. The core competencies of SCS's products have been in the 2.45 GHz frequency range. The development of a UHF band product between SCS and Texas Instruments will enhance the product lines offered by both companies.

Texas Instruments Announces Industry's First DSPcodec That Maximizes DSP Performance while Reducing Development Time by a Factor of Ten

Device Enables Voice Capabilities in Broadband Applications

DALLAS, Feb. 14, Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN - news) today introduced two new high-performance codecs specifically designed for use with TI's digital signal processors (DSPs) in traditional and emerging voice-band applications.

These new 16-bit linear DSPcodecs feature 22 kilo-samples per second (kSPS), a powerful serial interface,extensive applications support and 25 percent lower power consumption than comparable devices. The codecs enable voice extensions in broadband applications, such as Voice Over Internet Protocol phones and cable modems, and fits well in other
applications, such as hands-free car kits, PBX phones and other microphone-based products.

The TLV320AIC10 codec delivers 84 deciBels (dB) of Signal to Noise Ratio for analog-to-digital (ADC) and digital-to-analog (DAC) conversion. The device operates from 3 to 5.5 volts for both analog and digital supplies, and consumes only 39 milliWatts (mW) of power at eight kSPS, which is 25 percent lower than competitive solutions.

Applications Support Enable Working System in Hours

The TLV320AIC10 includes extensive application support, reducing customer design time. The TLV320AIC10 evaluation module (EVM) plugs directly onto the TMS320C54x(TM) and TMS320C62x(TM) EVMs eliminating the need for customer fabricated boards or soldering. A fully-tested TLV320AIC10 interface software driver is available for use within the Code Composer Studio development environment for the 'C54x(TM) DSP. The interface software driver functionality includes DSP
serial port configuration, codec configuration, DAC and ADC data transfer, and allows master/slave codec operation. This
level of support eliminates customer design risk and enables a working 'C54x(TM) DSP solution within hours, which is a ten fold improvement over competitive solutions.

Serial Interface Maximizes TMS320 DSP Performance

The TLV320AIC10 is the first codec available with continuous data transfer that supports the DSP auto buffering unit, reducing
interrupts by a factor of the buffer size (up to 64 Kbytes) and significantly reduces overhead associated with those interrupts. A
host port interface is provided to support ''on-the-fly reconfiguration,'' which allows codec registers to be reprogrammed
without interrupting DMA block transfers. Up to eight codecs can be connected to a single DSP serial port via master/slave mode, maximizing serial port usage.

Analog Interface Improved

The TLV320AIC10 integrates many standard analog functions to reduce system cost and board size. Microphone bias and apre-amplifier (with 50dB maximum gain) enable direct connection to standard electret microphones. Also included in the device are programmable gain amplifiers with -36 to +24 dB gain range, anti-aliasing filter, 2:1 analog multiplexor and power saving standby mode.

A Low Voltage I/O Alternative

TI also announced the TLV320AIC11 DSPcodec. This device is identical to the TLV320AIC10 except it supports low voltage digital I/O operation at 1.2 and 1.8 VDC. The low I/O voltage capability of this device makes it the only codec available that directly interfaces to TI's 1.8V 'UC5409 and 1.2V 'UVC5402 DSPs for use in low power applications, such as digital hearing aids.

Availability, Packaging and Pricing

The TLV320AIC10 is available now from TI and its authorized distributors. It is packaged in a 48-pin thin quad flat pack
(TQFP). Suggested resale pricing is $3.75 in quantities of 1,000. The TLV320AIC10 EVM is also available now. Software drivers and EVM documentation are downloadable from TI's web site. The TLV320AIC11 is sampling now, with volume production planned for April 2000. It is packaged in a 48-pin TQFP. Pricing is planned at $4.25 in quantities of 1,000.
