Today's news as reporetd by Mohan Marette: SIFY sharing 4% of its stock with another biggie -- now if that biggie were Softbank (who MUST be planning to enter the Indian market!), SIFY would shine even more.
(And let's not worry about last night's drop of 15% -- 't was a mere drop of profit-taking.)

India's largest private Internet service provider (ISP), Satyam Infoway, is in talks with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) to forge a strategic alliance to set up cyber kiosks at various petrol pumps across the country.

Satyam plans to introduce around 40 such cyber kiosks in various petrol pumps to begin with. It will later add more petrol pumps to its list.

The plan centres around the fact that many petrol pumps across the country are trying to offer additional facilities to customers who drive in for refueling.

Many petrol pumps are already setting up facilities to offer fruits, vegetables and groceries to customers.

Cyber kiosks will be an added feature, akin to the public telephone booths which are available in many pumps.

For Satyam, which currently has a subscriber base of over 110,000 across the country, such tieups are expected to enhance usage of Internet and further its brand visibility.

Satyam, which currently offers services in over 32 cities, is well positioned to provide the requisite connectivity at various points.

Satyam Infoway is also trying to work out similar plans on a local scale.

The company has chalked out a similar plan to introduce ports to various franchisees for setting up public Internet facilities across the city and in the suburbs.

Satyam Infoway is working out the modalities for providing ports to franchisees across the city.

Satyam has been conducting a private campaign to raise awareness of Internet usage and promote its services in the wake of tariff cuts by public sector telecom and ISP majors Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL).

The company has already applied for additional links of 2 mega bytes per second (mbps) from VSNL to cater to rising demand for its services.

It expects to see a further upswing in usage in Calcutta once its proposed joint venture with RPG Netcom to provide Internet services via television cable network goes onstream in April.
