Data General Delivers High Availability Consolidation Solutions At Microsoft Windows 2000 Conference AViiON AV 1400 High-Density Server and DG/RackManager Offer High-Availability Solutions; "Proof of Concept" Program Improves Time to Market and Mitigates Risk of Deploying Windows 2000 Technologies SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 15, 2000-- Data General, a Division of EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC - news), today announced the AViiON® AV 1400 high-density 2U server, and DG/RackManager(TM) rack management appliance at the Microsoft Windows 2000 conference and exposition. In addition, Data General is the first vendor to announce a unique packaged ''Proof-of-Concept'' solution that provides a fully functional Windows 2000 proof-of-concept computing infrastructure, ready to be piloted in the customer's organization within 30 days. These solutions deliver industry-leading levels of high availability, performance, and manageability and a solid platform that allows customers to ''scale out'' their Windows NT and Windows 2000 Server environments.
The AViiON AV 1400 high-density server is the latest addition to the AViiON family of servers, optimized for rackmount environments that incorporate multiple servers to provide greater control, manageability, and consolidation with effective workload balancing, high availability, and disaster recovery capabilities. The AV 1400 meets the requirements of a customer's key application areas and delivers a lower total cost of ownership and outstanding price/performance. DG/RackManager, an integrated rackmount management appliance, offers additional support for high availability and scalable architectures through local and remote management and monitoring of rack components.
''Data General's AV 1400 and other highly reliable, available and manageable AViiON solutions are strategic resources for companies running mission-critical operations on the Windows 2000 platform,'' said Deborah Willingham, vice president, Windows Marketing, Microsoft Corporation. ''Through companies like Data General, we are ensuring that our customers receive the best technology and support available as they migrate to Windows 2000.''
The Windows 2000 Proof of Concept Program integrates a services component with these offerings that helps customers to fully understand how they can benefit from lower cost of ownership, improved service levels, and faster time to market by deploying Windows 2000-based rackmounted solutions. The program consists of a combination of Data General AViiON enterprise servers and professional services for Windows 2000 that provides a highly available computing infrastructure while minimizing interruptions to existing production systems, and enabling immediate testing of Windows 2000 capabilities and applications.
''This 'Proof of Concept' approach is unique because it allows customers to pilot their Windows 2000 concept before full deployment. As a result, customers gain insight into how they can lower the cost of ownership, improve service levels and time to market, and manage the risk of a new technology implementation.'' said Bob Iacono, vice president of professional services for Data General.
''With these unique solutions, we are enabling the simplification, control and consolidation of computing assets in preparation for the centralized e-infostructure our customers require,'' said Mike Parise, vice president of worldwide marketing for Data General. ''Data General is committed to providing the best combination of technology, service and support for customers looking to use the strength of the Windows 2000 network operating system.''
The AViiON AV 1400 - The Newest Addition to the Family
The AV 1400 is a high-density server, optimized for rackmount configurations, allowing up to 19 servers to be configured in a single cabinet. It provides high performance dual 700 MHz Intel Pentium III processors that include 256KB of integrated Level 2 cache, supporting up to 2 gigabytes of ECC-protected SDRAM memory. The server comes standard with high-availability redundant hot-swappable cooling systems, a hot-swappable power source, three PCI slots and integrated dual SCSI LAN and video, in a Data General-designed 2U chassis. Internal storage includes bays for four internal hot-swappable drives, an internal DAT tape drive, a CD-ROM and a 3.5-inch diskette with external storage, provided by EMC CLARiiON(TM) Fibre Channel arrays. The AV 1400 is also packaged as a part of Data General's pre-configured, pre-tested TermServer-in-a-Box(TM) solution.
DG/RackManager
Data General's rack management appliance provides effective, easy-to-use management of high-density Windows NT- and Windows 2000-based servers by integrating management functions for components in the server racks. DG/RackManager centralizes fault management and alerts, and provides a single call-in/call-out point for service and support through an integrated rackmount console that includes a monitor, keyboard and mouse. The appliance consolidates the emergency management port (EMP) connections for all the managed servers to enable functions such as centralized fault management and alerting, integration of management tools for rack components (such as UPS and switches), and remote power-on and power-off. It will offer control either through the included rackmount console or remotely over an integrated Ethernet LAN. Inbound and outbound WIN/Alert calls for all attached systems will be centralized through DG/RackManager and the included external modem.
Windows 2000 Proof of Concept
A combination of AViiON enterprise servers running Microsoft Windows 2000 and integrated Data General professional services, this fixed-price program is designed to help customers model and evaluate proposed Windows 2000 solutions prior to large-scale deployments. The program consists of an initial detailed assessment of the customer's IT environment from an enterprise perspective, a high-level enterprise architecture design, followed by a functional pilot design. The solution ensures that customers fully understand how they can achieve the benefits of lower cost of ownership, improved service levels, and faster time to market by deploying Windows 2000-based rackmounted solutions from Data General. Together, these solutions simplify the management of resources, consolidate applications and infrastructure services and better control IT assets.
