Before the Bell - Lucent <LU.N> ticks higher


NEW YORK, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Shares in Lucent Technologies Inc. rose slightly in pre-opening trade on Tuesday after the telecommunications equipment maker won contracts to build mobile phone networks in New Zealand and Australia.

Lucent, the most widely held U.S. stock, was at 53-5/8 on the Instinet electronic broker system, up from a Monday close of 53-3/8.

Telecom Corp. of New Zealand Ltd. <TEL.NZ> said on Tuesday it had selected Lucent to build mobile phone networks in New Zealand and Australia for the Telecom Corp. subsidiary AAPT <AAP.AX> using the new code division multiple access standard.

Telecom Corp. said it would invest around NZ$210 million ($101 million), with a launch expected in 2001. It said AAPT would spend A$450 million to A$500 million ($279 million to $310 million) on its network.
