"Summary

On Feb. 14, the Jerusalem daily Haaretz reported that Israel and the United States are developing a joint defense pact. Under the pact, Washington would actively guarantee Israeli security. The pact is part of an effort to secure a formalized peace between Israel and Syria. But to secure a peace agreement, the United States may commit itself to a long-term policy that would undermine its relations with Arab countries. This would ultimately limit the ability of the United States to develop and maintain relations with Arab nations."

The real reason (IMHO) that SA announced the sudden cut back in production......... hard nosed Middle East politics ............. which also probably means that production will not increase any time soon unless the US backs away from the position. Probably also an attempt by President Clinton to boost support for Hillary?s run in NY. But this brinkmanship is probably going to escalate quickly. It will be interesting to see if SA can (or even try to) get the message across to the general public as to why its going to cost what its going to cost to heat a home and drive those SUV?s. However given the way the media spins the Democratic message to the exclusion of all else most of the time its doubtful we?ll even hear about this in the mainstream US press. Oil supply will increase when the US acknowledges the message they are being sent.

This could be positive for further increased use of Natural Gas as its one of the few cards Clinton/Richardson have to play apart from the strategic oil reserves. This could also be positive for further gas to liquid and gas to wire projects, as ways of utilizing stranded Gas deposits. It may also be positive for accelerated approval for the use of FPSO?s in the deep water Gulf for that matter.
