Ashanti says close to deal
LONDON, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Ashanti Goldfields Co Ltd said on Tuesday it was close to concluding a deal acceptable to dissident shareholders, its bankers and the Ghana government.

''Ashanti is in the final stages of discussions with the government of Ghana,'' the troubled Ghanaian mining company said in a brief statement issued in London.

''The company anticipates the successful conclusion of these discussions will lead to a settlement acceptable to all parties.''

One banking source familiar with the situation said the parties were now ''very close'' to a deal to reform the board and approve a $100 million working capital bridging loan needed to pay for work on Ashanti's promising Geita project in Tanzania.
