OSLO, Norway--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 15, 2000--
Drives New Revenue Generating Opportunities Through Combination of Data with Video Services
At NAB 2000, TANDBERG Television, a leading supplier of open digital solutions for the management and transmission of digital TV signals, will launch its new evolution 5000 broadcast range. The evolution 5000 product range includes open solutions for encoding, multiplexing, modulation, statistical multiplexing and control software. The evolution 5000 range will be available for both ATSC and DVB applications. "Our customers today demand high-performance open systems that are very flexible combined with excellent reliability and ever lower lifetime costs. The evolution 5000 range delivers on all these characteristics and will enable our customers to realize their business goals," says Ben Allen, Product Marketing Manager of TANDBERG Television.
"In addition to a rich feature set at launch we have an exciting roadmap which will deliver ground-breaking functionality to our customers allowing new revenue generating services to be launched. The combination of data with video services is an excellent example of such a new revenue-generating opportunity. At NAB we will be demonstrating our opportunistic data capability, which in combination with Reflex(TM) statistical multiplexing, is able to dynamically add data services to a statistically multiplexed MPEG video stream. Uniquely, this enables broadcasters to dynamically manage the bandwidth allocated to data, delivering a minimum quality of service as well as exploiting any bandwidth slack. evolution 5000 is a very significant new product range that will reset standards in our industry," concludes Tim Sheppard, Head of Product Marketing at TANDBERG Television. evolution 5000 MPEG-2 Encoder Products The evolution 5000 encoder range consists of three models, two of which are based on the C-Cube Dvexpert(TM)chip set. The top of the range E5611 utilizes the latest in-house designs in encoding technology from TANDBERG Television. The range supports a wide range of inputs and interfaces, the 2RU chassis design also allows for further expansion within the encoder with the addition of a series of optional modules covering modulation, additional audio encoding, scrambling solutions, re-multiplexing and a wide range of output interface converters. The front panel encoder LCD also uniquely doubles up as a display monitor, showing the operator the input from source straight to the encoder front panel display. TANDBERG Television can offer a unique combination of features to maximize the use of bandwidth, enabling maximum high-quality video channels and/or additional data. The combination of the following sophisticated features on top end encoders and multiplexers ensure that the quality and bandwidth is the best available, eliminating the need to do dual-pass encoding or other highly latent methods:
-- Spatio-temporal noise reduction and other pre-processing techniques -- Fully exhaustive "Pixel Perfect" motion estimation combined with TANDBERG's unique in house advanced field-proven compression technology -- Opportunistic data insertion -- Fast-reacting, frame-accurate Reflex statistical multiplexing for both video and data evolution 5000 Multiplexer The evolution 5000 multiplexer is an MPEG video/audio and data multiplexer. It is an open system product supporting all common industry standard interfaces (including SMPTE310, DVB ASI Copper/Optical and DVB SPI). In terms of conditional access, it supports both DVB simulcrypt and ATSC standards, with monitoring via SNMP communication protocols. The evolution 5000 multiplexer is a highly flexible product and features a modular chassis that ships in two sizes for small and large applications. The products are fully scaleable and can be configured to exact customer requirements. This means that systems are effectively future-proof and can grow in line with customer requirements either by expanding the channel capacity or by adding new features. Performance has been enhanced, increasing the maximum output bit rate to 100Mbps, while halving the power consumption. The modular architecture of the evolution 5000 platform also enables an acceleration of TANDBERG Television's feature rollout and roadmaps. For example future applications will require the ability to manipulate the bit rates of MPEG video services, either to dynamically reduce the bit rates of incoming video services or to insert pre-compressed content directly into a transport steam. One of the key future features of evolution 5000 is the support of MPEG manipulation technology, and as an industry first, it will be offered as an option within the multiplexer.
evolution 5000 Reflex(TM) Statistical Multiplexing Reflex statistical multiplexing, used worldwide on over 2,500 channels of digital TV, is also supported within the evolution 5000 range. The much-used statistical multiplexing package is now enhanced with further design improvements to aid the multiplex and encoding performance, increasing bandwidth utilization by up to 30% per multiplex with frame-accurate calculation and distribution of available bit-rate. Reflex is now supported in both MPEG-2 4:2:0MP@ML & MPEG-2 4:2:2P@ML encoding profiles. The NAB demonstration of opportunistic data statistical multiplexing marks a significant industry first in combining data and video services within a single multiplex. evolution 5000 Multiplex Element Manager (MEM) The evolution 5000 MEM is an easy-to-use software control system that runs on a Windows NT platform that configures, controls and monitors all the system hardware components. The user interfaces have been designed with ease of use as the primary objective, as such they are both intuitive and highly graphical. This provides broadcasters with complete control of incoming and outgoing broadcast streams through encoders, multiplexers and modulators. evolution 5000 MA5200 MPEG Adapter The evolution 5000 MA5200 MPEG Adapter is a high-quality MPEG-2 to ATM adapter, combining digital solutions capability with technical expertise in video transmissions over PDH/SDH/SONET networks. The MA5200 provides the operator with a flexible solution that takes advantage of lower operating tariffs and increased network capacity. Designed to take advantage of emerging ATM based services, the MA5200 is an ideal bridge for contribution applications such as outside broadcasts or studio-to-studio transfers. New functionality to be released at NAB includes true dial-up-on-demand software, allowing the user to only pay for the bit rate and time used, further saving cost. evolution 5000 MA5300 MPEG Adapter The evolution 5000 MA5300 MPEG Adapter is a third-generation MPEG-2 to ATM bridging solution. Offering simplified system architecture, the MA5300 has been specifically designed to meet demanding requirements where multiple transport streams are to be concentrated or de-concentrated through a single telecom network link, such as post-production distribution applications. Based around open standards, the MA5300 provides a highly efficient means of transmitting and/or receiving multiple transport streams over PDH/SDH/SONET networks. evolution 5000 MT5600 DVB-T Modulator From the world leaders in OFDM, the compact MT5600 is the third generation DVB-T modulator from TANDBERG Television. Based on the core OFDM technology established in real networks, the modular design allows for high levels of integration and includes switchable channel bandwidth, tuneable IF outputs, 'near' seamless input switching and digital pre-correction capability. It is also packed with a host of advanced control and monitoring features to ensure ease of operation. evolution 5000 High Definition (HD) Professional Receiver The Tandberg Television PMRX5800 is an ATSC and DVB receiver for professional HD applications. The PMRX5800 focuses on the professional user and has real benefits when receiving contributed and distributed feeds into studio and affiliates or other distribution head-ends. It supports all prevalent HD formats and boasts a wide range of interfacing options.
