Hello All,

Some *very* good reading in the latest edition of ASAP on-line ...

forbes.com

I'd recommend the reading to anyone ...

From this article: forbes.com

> ESTHER DYSON hosts the Highly regarded PC Forum and High Tech Forum

Most of the brilliant minds in the research sectors fully understand the strategic value of "decentralized control" and how it is going to dominate the Internet ... it's what the Internet was designed for. Individuals with control over their own actions and identities without forced requirements of centralized control and accounting. What is key is removing the "requirement" for centralized intermediaries, and making it an option ... that can be offered or enforced if so desired, but not required.

I'm digging for more information on the "Personal NDS" beta ... I'm hoping that the press gets to review this soon so that we can see if NOVL is on the right track ... this will be a huge value if Novell gets on it quickly with the right architecture ...

This also relates to the article the other day about Instant Messaging ... I believe that individuals and corporations will realized that decentralized solutions will provide them *much* more value than giving away their intellectual property for free to centralized solutions like AIM and ICQ ...

People *will* learn that these intermediaries are *not* a requirement ... it's funny how humans can learn these things ... and the company that plans for this inevitable event will have the solution that the people want! ;-)

Scott - help! I can see something of your vision but not understand a few concepts involved --

Personal LDAP servers will need to be connected to the internet at all times for me to access "personalized" directory information no? Unless your reference to Personal Web Server is just a convienent way to express an idea. I can use the Personal WebServer to create a personalize website but that information is only available to me if I'm sitting at the PC or that PC is connected to the internet.

I mean say I'm at work and my personal LDAP services are running on my PC at home - I would need to connect to that PC to access information. Unless all PCs I access need to have this "personal LDAP service" installed and synchronized....

I mean, the article talks about "Personal NDS" as an extension of the client software "caching" directory information onto a PC. What happens when users are mobile users (use more than one workstation during the course of the day) in a corporate environment?

Does this cache clear each time a new session is started or a new user logs in from a certain PC? [I guess I need some more info here]

I agree that "personalized directories" will be the next evolution but somehow I see these "personal directories" "hosted" by a trusted source allowing me to access them from any device at any location at any time (not just with PCs from work or home). The ability to "download" directory information onto my workstation locally greatly enhances the control I have over my information which is updated on an pre-determined schedule or automatically on a set timetable with a central datastore.

This way I can build a highly customized internet experience based on my settings in my personal directory (such as static web content, messaging, live streaming content and interactions with other people).

Just some thoughts...
