Greece Wants All Sanctions Lifted Against Yugoslavia

ATHENS (AP)--Greece on Monday said international sanctions against
Yugoslavia should be lifted because they had worsened the situation in that
country.

Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas said Greece would propose the
gradual lifting of sanctions at a European Union Foreign Ministers meeting
Monday in Brussels.

"We believe the situation has reached a dead end with the policies currently
being followed," Reppas said.

He added that Premier Costas Simitis also called for lifting the sanctions
during a weekend meeting of Balkan heads of government in Bucharest,
Romania.

"The premier emphasized the necessity of another approach to dealing with
the problem that has come up in Yugoslavia," Reppas said. "The imposition of
sanctions mostly affects the population, the citizens, the people of that
country, and lead to complete different results sought by those who thought
them up, planned and imposed them."

Many Greeks oppose sanctions on Yugoslavia, and anti-NATO feeling ran
high in alliance-member Greece during the 78-day bombing campaign over
the Kosovo crisis.

when everyone else phucks around, the Greek government stands up once again...I used to ridicule all Greek governements but Papandreou's death and the rise of Simitis was the best thing that ever happened there this century...

George,

Those sweet KLA guys just crashed an ambulance outside
of Mitrovica. The driver fled after trying to U-turn
it in front of a French checkpoint.

Inside the ambulance? They had 18 anti-tank rockets
a few hundred grenade launchers and clips for AK-47s.

The ambulance was traced to a donation to the Albanians
from a European human aid organization. Gotta love
those Albanians.
