Dell Consumer Chief to Head Flagging European Unit

ROUND ROCK, Texas (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp., (NasdaqNM:DELL - news) the world's No. 2 personal computer maker, said on Tuesday that it has replaced its European division president, following several quarters of starkly lower revenue growth in Europe than in other regions.

Paul Bell was tapped to head the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, effective immediately, in addition to his position as a senior vice president and co-general manager of Dell's home and small-business group.

He replaces John Legere, who resigned.

Dell shares rose 1-7/16 to 37-7/8 on Nasdaq on Tuesday.

In the fourth quarter, the European division reported that revenues grew only 8 percent over the prior fourth quarter, well below the company's lowered outlook for revenue growth rates for the company as a whole.

The Round Rock-based company has warned that revenue growth percentage rates for the company for the foreseeable future would be in low 30s, off historic rates of growth above 50 percent.

Sales to large European corporate customers fell off in the fourth quarter due to spending slowdowns on new equipment tied to the Year 2000 transition, especially in the United Kingdom. Sales to small- and medium-sized businesses in Europe grew 25 percent, suggesting negative growth in large corporate sales.

Dell Vice Chairman Kevin Rollins said in a statement that Bell was tapped due to his attention to expanding home and small business sales in Europe, which has grown at nearly three times the industry rate.

''The profitable growth of our HSB segment under Paul's leadership has been exceptional,'' Rollins said.

Bell also oversaw the development of the company's Internet Web site, which accounted for nearly half of Dell's sales by the end of last year.>>
