it's pretty straight-forward and not really a big problem imo...in a systemic financial crash the FDIC will fail anyway. a big federal bailout will be unavoidable in that case. i don't think it really matters if Merrill's customers cash balances are in FDIC insured accounts or not in that case, except perhaps to Merrill's customers...<ggg>
note that a crash would no doubt lead to high profile bank failures, due to derivatives exposure, but enough big institutions will survive to rebuild the system....i think.
