Brazil's a bad choice, slavery wasn't abolished there until 1888. I believe it was the last place in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery. Slavery did continue to be "legal" in such enlightened places as the Belgian Congo.

Don't think you would have been happy in Brazil. Slavery wasn't abolished until after 1871. Some ex-Confederates moved to Brazil after the Civil War and took up farming. Their descendants are still there. Along with the Portuguese speaking Japanese.
