WATER flows to Bengal. BASU offers protection--JPR 'Water': Basu warns against disruption hinduonline.com By Malabika Bhattacharya CALCUTTA, FEB. 15. A showdown appears to be shaping up between West Bengal's ruling Communists and the Opposition BJP over the filmmaker, Ms. Deepa Mehta's move to shoot the controversial film, Water in Bengal after her original plans for shooting in Varanasi ran into a rough weather following opposition from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). A measure of the coming showdown was available on Tuesday when the Chief Minister, Mr. Jyoti Basu, said his Government would ensure protection for Ms. Mehta and her crew if it eventually accorded permission to them to shoot the film in Calcutta and elsewhere in Bengal. ``If anyone tries to be disruptive after we grant permission to them to shoot the film, my Government will ensure that such disrupters are immediately put in place,' Mr.Basu said. He made these observations when his attention was drawn to the State BJP's announcement on Monday that it would activate its network of supporters to stop the filming of Water in Bengal as it was ``anti- Hinduism'. The responsibility of the final decision on allowing filming, however, will rest with Mr. Buddhadev Bhattacharya, Deputy Chief Minister - also Information & Cultural Affairs Minister - who is reported to have held a round of discussions with his officials and various progressive groups. Ms. Shabana Azmi, who is playing the lead role in the film, is expected to meet Mr. Bhattacharya tomorrow to seek permission for shooting. Mr. Bhattacharya was critical of the Sangh Parivar for standing in the way alleging that the RSS was trying to politicise Water.
