tekboy,

You are positing that the HDTV/set-top box agreement would be a critical indicator of the formation of Gemstar's value chain, and thus a defining moment marking its progress through the TALC. Moreover, it would be precisely the kind of moment we should all be looking for with regard to the companies we follow, since it is so obscure an event that only we will be able to appreciate (and thus act on) its true significance.

Yep, ahead of the crowd.

The more I think about it, the more I believe this to be true. As I understand it, the biggest obstacle to the agreement has to do with ensuring that the IPG that is originally installed in the hardware is the one made available to the end user. With the IPG at the core of the current disagreement, if that disagreement gets resolved it is in itself an acknowledgement of the importance of IPGs.

By the way, you need not be concerned about the stock's potential to achieve obscene heights as far as Gorilla Gaming is concerned. Once the tornado takes place, it will be the Godzilla aspect of the business model that takes the stock to obscene heights.

GMST/HDTV

Mike and TEK, enjoying this conversation since the Gem is now my #2 holding. The HDTV factor made me run out to my local circuit city where I questioned a sales person on HDTV. I was told that they are currently only selling around 2-3 sets per month which is understandable at an average price of $7000. He also said that the broadcasting of HD programs as a standard is yrs away. If we are awaiting the adoption of Gem's IPG into HDTVs as a defining moment, which may happen soon, then we better have alot of patience in waiting for the mass adoption of HDTV. I fear that in the next 3-5 yrs HDTV will make such a small ripple that we may not even notice it.

My defining moment will be when Sony announces that all their TVs over 19" will come standard with the guide ala Thompson. This would mean that Hitachi and others must follow suit and Gem's guide would be a defacto purchase everytime a tv is bought.

Defining moment #2 is when the cable companies join the team.

Defining moments 1 + 2= category 5 tornado.
