It strains credibility that Yale would let Benjamin attend for long enough to earn the credits towards a degree, despite the fact that he was Jewish, but expel him before graduation because he was Jewish. Not sure what being "a gentleman" means in this situation. If one cheats at cards, my understanding is that he is no longer a gentleman, but perhaps you mean something different. Perhaps you believe that being well-born makes one a gentleman no matter what, or perhaps that good manners do. My understanding is that his real claim to fame was that he was the one who advocated persuading slaves to fight on the Rebel side by promising them their freedom if the South won.
