A somewhat perverse story: It has long been a tradition here for the President to pardon a group of convicts, those judged to be no further threat, on Christmas. It turns out, though, that one of those on the list last Christmas was that of Norberto Manero, an individual of some notoriety. Manero and his brothers ran a government-sponsored (with lame denial) paramilitary group in Mindanao, doing battle against Muslim secessionists and commie rebels. His group was known for wearing amulets which supposedly rendered them invulnerable and for occasionally dining on the vital organs of their (numerous) victims. Manero is believed to have been involved in somewhere around 500 killings; he finally got locked up for shooting (and consuming the brain of) an Italian missionary priest of alleged leftist sympathy. The church blew a gasket, and even his political connections couldn't keep Manero out of jail, though he was confined in considerable luxury. Anyway, he's now out, and planning to settle down in Manila, despite some outcry from those who would feel safer if he were locked up. He was interviewed on the local news the other night; the interviewer asked what he would do now that he was free. He responded, with a totally straight face, that he is planning to open a restaurant. I have to wonder what the specialty of the house will be. He's apparently being ferried around in a Mercedes with a few bodyguards, and staying in one of Manila's best hotels, so there are apparently still some friends in high places. I suppose there will be no shortage of capital for the proposed restaurant. Sometimes I think I live in a strange place.
