Global Crossing extends network reach to Germany

FRANKFURT, Feb 16 (Reuters) - U.S. fibre optic cable company Global Crossing Ltd (NasdaqNM:GBLX - news) said on Wednesday it has extended its fibre optic network for data, Internet and phone transmissions in Europe to six cities.

The company's network of so-called ``city rings' in Europe -- linking its European and other global networks -- has added Germany's financial centre Frankfurt to a communications grid joining Amsterdam, London, Brussels, Paris and Milan, it said.

The drive to tie European cities into its other networks is part of the company's plan to become a global telecommunications services provider, Global Crossing chief Robert Annunziata said at a news conference.

Global Crossing said it aims to establish networks in the cities around the globe which account for 80 percent of international telephone calls and data transfers.

The cities are to be plugged into a 150,000 kilometre long under-sea cable network connecting 24 countries.

The company said it plans to tie another 10 German cities into its pan-European fibre optic network by the end of May, including Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Cologne.

The group's networks in Europe are eventually to be opened to private customers as well as major telecoms groups renting or leasing its lines, Annunziata said.

Its customers include Swisscom , Cable & Wireless (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: CWZ.L), as well as Deutsche Telekom AG , France Telecom and Telecom Italia .

In October Global Crossing agreed to buy the telecom arm of Britain's Racal Electronics Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: RCAL.L) for $1.65 billion, adding 4,650 miles of cable laid along Britain's railway lines to its global lines.
