DJ China Unicom's Mobile Phone Mkt Share Hits 22% - Report

Dow Jones News Service ~ February 16, 2000 ~ 5:08 am EST

BEIJING (Dow Jones)--China Unicom's share of the domestic mobile telephone market expanded to 22% with 9.31 million customers, the official China Economic Times reported Wednesday.

The report comes on the same day Unicom, China's number two telecommunications firm, formally signed a licensing deal with Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM). That agreement, reached in principle earlier this month, sets terms for royalty payments to the U.S. company for the use of its CDMA technology in Unicom's wireless networks.

Qualcomm officials have said they expect Unicom to grab 10 million new customers this year with CDMA, which is a rival technology to the European GSM standard that now dominates China's market.

The Qualcomm deal could also help bolster underdog Unicom in its struggle against former industry monopoly China Telecom. That state-run company, which uses GSM in its extensive mobile systems, also has a dominant share of other telecommunications sectors, including more than 100 million fixed-line customers.

Unicom, which was set up by the government to compete with China Telecom, has been plagued by management problems, and disputes with foreign investors that have stalled plans for an overseas share issue.

Wednesday's report said Unicom, whose full name is China United Telecommunications, increased the capacity of its own GSM networks by 6.65 million users last year. It also completed preliminary preparations for a 3.15 million-user CDMA network, the newspaper said without elaborating.

Unicom hopes to raise its total mobile telephone subscribers to 55 million-60 million and further boost its market share to 35% by 2005, it said.
