ALA and NN can not talk to public right now, so any rumor
can be created to fluctuate the price.

"He [Mr. Tchuruk] wants to be number one in something. And
buying Newbridge would make Alcatel a world leader in ATM, at
least for the time being," said one source close to the negotiations.

"His direct reports know they can't maintain market share [in
ATM], that it's sure to drop ... but he wants to buy it."

They also forgot to mention that NN leadership in core LMDS + ALA access LMDS = No. 1 worldwide.

It is so obvious that I do not think Mr.Tchuruk's EVPs are so stupid.
This also tells me this rumor was invented by Street.
As far as ATM drop. Well with FCC ruling everybody including RBOCs know that ATM will growth significantly over the next several years.

Siemens AG and Ericsson SA, big European telecom vendors who
have reportedly looked at Newbridge, are not in active talks with
the firm, sources believe.

Because NN can not talk actively(at least officially) to many companies at the same time.
I belive it is the law.
Anyone would like to comment.

Hate to say I don't know, but what's the track record of Jill Vardy's unnamed sources? Interesting that one of them "knows" NN can't maintain ATM market share.

Regardless of outcome of any negotiations that may be in progress, they would seem to validate TM's willingness to sell.
