Gold leader welcomes foreign takeovers

The head of Australia's biggest gold producer has welcomed the prospect of foreign takeovers within the local gold industry.

Normandy Mining's executive chairman, Robert Champion de Crespigny, was today detailing the company's record half-year profit of $66.5 million at the Securities Institute in Sydney.

He says a rationalisation of both the international and domestic industries is likely and ought to occur.

"We want to be out there and play the game and there will be more and more rationalisations both within Australia and internationally," he said.

"And we should encourage these dreadful foreigners to come into here because that will lead to more investment in our sector, I think."
