[February 16, 2000--MUMBAI] UK-based e-commerce company Netdecisions is planning to make India--specifically Mumbai--the hub of its activities in the Asia Pacific region, including the Middle-East, Australia, and Africa.

The company, which showed revenues in excess of $10 million last year, has received approval to invest $6 million towards its Indian operations.

Netdecisions, which creates e-commerce solutions for clients and maintains its own e-commerce ventures across industries, already has a software and content development center in Vishakapatnam, a town in coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Plans are on to start more such centers in the country--besides Mumbai, potential cities include Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Pune.

"We want to establish a network of centers here that will support our expansion in the Asia Pacific region," said Charles Mindenhall, co-founder of Netdecisions.

"Since Mumbai has both management and IT expertise, the entire knowledge management process would be happening here."

The company's clients for e-commerce solutions include eToys, Thomson Travel, McDonald's, and Coca-Cola. Solutions range from business consulting, branding and marketing, design and development, and database and network configuration.

The company's portfolio of e-commerce ventures includes various industries such as wine (madaboutwine.com), travel (The First Resort), TV production (produxion.com), and training (training decisions).

"India is usually seen as a place to source cheap programmers, but we think it has some of the best consultants, and even media and advertising executives," said Manoj Badale, cofounder of the company. "We intend to source a variety of skills from this country. We want to mirror the organization that we have in the UK, right here."

The Indian operations of Netdecisions will be handled by Ranjit Barthakur, chairman of the Indian subsidiary of the company.

Mindenhall claimed that, unlike most Internet companies, Netdecisions has been making a profit for some time, though he did not disclose any details.
