Merrill Lynch's Zidar on Applied Materials, Nasdaq: Commentary
By Jonathan Make

New York, Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Robert Zidar, co-portfolio
manager of Merrill Lynch & Co.'s Internet fund, talks about
Applied Materials Inc. and his forecast for the Nasdaq Composite
Index. Zidar's fund has about $1 billion in assets.

Applied Materials, the No. 1 maker of semiconductor
equipment, said yesterday that fiscal second-quarter orders will
rise and that earnings will exceed analysts' forecasts.

''Technology outperforming the broader market is going to
continue (over the next year). I do think that the Nasdaq can have
another good year, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it up firmly
in double digits.''

''Applied Materials is a pretty good bellwether for
technology spending, and I believe technology is driving our
economy. Semiconductors are pervasive in everything we use.
Applied Materials is a good bellwether for technology companies
doing well in an environment that may otherwise not be doing that
great.''
