Don't know the answer, Pied Piper, except to say that Linux itself is free and software is not, thus who will make the money?....can quote from IBD story, however.

[quotes from IBD interview with Corel CEO Michael Cowpland and Imprise/Borland CEO Dale Fuller--two companies preparing to merge, as announced last week]

They plan to recast the new company, named Corel, as a Linux powerhouse. Linux is a so-called open source alternative to Windows and other operating systems.

Linux's basic code is available free to anyone, and several companies are developing versions of the software, mostly for computer networks. Corel is one of the few pitching Linux to PC users. In November, the companies launched a version of the Linux operating system that's designed to be easier to use.

Next quarter, Corel plans to release a suite of office software programs that run on Linux. Imprise, meanwhile, has developed utility software to help Linux users.

IBD asked, "You aspire to become the No.l Linux company. How far off is that goal?"

Answer: In terms of actual results, we already have tremendous numbers to show. In the fourth quarter, we shipped over 3.2 million units of the Corel Linux OS. We created the desktop PC Linux market overnight. Those numbers put us in the same range as Red Hat already.

Next quarter we have our office suite coming out, which should put us well ahead of Red Hat. But we're already showing good numbers. In terms of Linux downloads, we're No. 1 and No. 2.......
