The Turkish Army is the second largest army in NATO.
The Supreme Council of National Security, chaired by the Prime Minister, is comprised of military leaders, and the ministers of defense and the economy, and also functions as a de facto constitutional watchdog. The military plays a key role in both foreign and domestic policy, and senior officers make up a highly respected elite class.
