Maybe Freddy will deign to enlighten us as to why the flag of a losing cause should fly over the South Carolina state capital. In every instance that I can recall, the victors of a conquering force got to put their flag up, e.g., the famous statue depicting the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. We gave the Japanese back their country after the Occupation, we never intended to keep it, but the U.S. sure ain't giving South Carolina back, that's what the war was about.

The way Louisiana handles it is to fly all the flags, I believe they are all inside the state capital in the rotunda, not outside.<edit>Not the rotunda, in the main hallway, click on the top link and scroll down. All the flags are there, including the Confederate flag, and no one complains.

>>Flags of the various nations which have ruled Louisiana hang from the balcony above: Castile and Leon, Bourbon France, Bourbon Spain, England, French tricolor, 15-star U.S. flag, flag of the Republic of West Florida, Louisiana national flag, Confederate Battle flag, Confederate Stars and Bars, Louisiana State flag, and the modern U.S. flag.<<
