US COMMERCE DEPT TO RELEASE 4Q E-SALES DATA ON MARCH 3
11:01 EST 02/16

WASHINGTON (MktNews) - The U.S. Commerce Department plans to release new data on electronic Internet sales in the retail sector, with the first report due on March 3 at 10:00 a.m. EST.

E-commerce sales over the Internet are already incorporated into the monthly retail sales reports, but the newest detailed report will indicate how much of the sales were completed on the web. The Commerce Department is expected to release one overall estimate for e-sales.

There will not be historical comparisons, Commerce Department sources say, as the October-December quarter was the first period that the government attempted to measure e-commerce.

Private estimates for e-commerce have been available for some time and range into the billions of dollars. Mail order sales, available for some time and perhaps roughly comparable to e-sales, account for about 4% of recent retail sales.
