Thean,

I appreciate your comments.

As I see it there is little to fear from having NCR as a competitor. In fact I think it will further the acceptance of self-checkout in markets beyond the grocery store. Noticeably absent from this market is IBM. I have yet to hear any rumors that they are developing a system of their own. Could OMPR become a buyout candidate?

I have had much experience with the current NCR self-checkout system since one is located less than a mile from my home in an Albertson's store. Albertsons was an NCR customer prior to installing the system. To date I am less than impressed with their system. As a labor saving device I have seen little savings from its use as the twin aisles required the full time attention of a store employee. A good checkout clerk could handle the same volume as the two aisles.

As I wrote in a post last August, most of the problems are due to the poor physical layout of the system. The screen is not located above the scanner/scale as it should be. Customers are easily confused by having to turn away from the scanner for any manual entry. It will be interesting to see if NCR has fixed this problem in their new units. We shall see.
