John, The question I would ask if I was a fund manager who had been selling JDSU recently is:
Will this stock much higher considering they have such a big launch of new products coming up in the near future? In addition, this company splits their stock the same week they showcase their new developments---the week of March 6 to 10.
If i was a fund manager, I would not sell JDSU at this point. Why not wait for higher levels considering that there is a lot on the horizon happening with this company. Until the new products announcement, all the focus seemed to have shifted to 2nd and 3rd tier stocks like Corning(GLW). Now the focus seems to be returning and fund managers will think real hard before they book their gains on JDSU.

I just feel the reluctance to sell is what will happen right about now. That is what can cause the explosive moves in a stock. Just a gut feeling.

I agree with you on the S and P but I still feel it could happen sooner. There have not been too many additions to the 500 recently. Biogen and Conexant got added recently. Considering that the S and P 500 and Dow 30 are losing their appeal as benchmarks in favor of the Nasdaq comp or Nasdaq100, I feel the committee will try to be quick in adding some big tech names soon. Of course JDSU is the biggest not in the index by a wide margin. I think its market cap is over 85 billion after factoring in the OCLI acquisitions. I am not really keeping of the market cap as it is getting to incredible levels for a company that so far is not qualified to be in the S and P 500.
Factor in an ETEK acquisition and we should be over 100 billion without any further gains in stock price!

I hope they do wait as you stated until after the split. I think the stock will go up on the product news and stock split alone. I would rather see an S and P addition just before April. However, I doubt the committee will allow it to get there.

I was trying stay from this S and P subject but I just can't seem to.<g>

BTW--One could also play stocks like VRTS and Q and maybe even Level3 as possible additions. Just short term plays that are going up on their own right now. If they get added, I can see a 10% increase in their shares and I would sell. I doubt I would abandon my JDSU holdings even after an addition.
