STOCKWATCH: ARM Holdings falls on fears of competition from U.S.'s Transmeta
LONDON (AFX) - Shares in ARM Holdings fell sharply in early morning trading as the market reacted nervously to speculation that it will face competition from U.S. unlisted company Transmeta Corp.
At 9:26 am, shares in ARM Holdings were down 79 pence at 4288, bouncing back from a previous low of 4256, with 143,662 shares traded.
The speculation follows Transmeta's announcement that they will be holding a
press conference in London on Feb 21, in advance of the release of their
x86-compatable Crusoe range of processors which they hope to start shipping
within the first half of 2000.
Transmeta's Crusoe range is seen by some brokers as a potential competitor
for ARM's StrongARM and ARM10 range of embedded chips, even though the majority
of sector analysts, market experts and ARM employees do not recognise any
potential overlap between the companies' products.
